Project name STREAM
Tagline Sustainable Tidal Resource for Energy Alternative
Manufacturing
Short Project Description Our team designed a versatile offshore platform for the Bristol Channel that combines environmental monitoring with renewable energy generation. The floating structure features a 50 m² deck raised 4 m above the waves and supports a 10 m tower outfitted with sensors for tidal flow, wind, and weather conditions. Anchored securely to withstand currents up to 1.5 m/s, it remains stable and minimizes ecological disturbance.

For power, we selected a vertical-axis turbine coupled to a linear generator, converting predictable tidal motions into electricity. An onboard rectifier and filter produce a steady output ready for grid connection. Throughout the project, we balanced structural integrity, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability—using decision matrices, seabed analysis, and impact assessments—to deliver a coherent, low-carbon solution that advances both research and practical coastal energy deployment. | | Time Length and Team | 30 Credits Module - Year 1 Engineering Group Project | | Material Submitted | Individual Literature Review, Group Presentation, Engineering Showcase, Low, Medium & High Fidelity Prototype | | Grade | 75% |
